Fraunhofer IPA

Finding solutions to organisational and technological challenges, particularly within the production environment of industrial enterprises is, in a nutshell, the key focus of the research and development work carried out at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA. With 14 individual departments engaged in the fields of Corporate Organisation, Automation and Surface Engineering, our R&D projects aim to enhance production processes and make products more cost-effective and environmentally friendly by identifying and exploiting the potential for automation and streamlining at clients’ companies. This helps to strengthen their international competitiveness and to create new employment opportunities.

The Fraunhofer IPA was founded in 1959 and incorporated in the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in 1971. Of the 59 institutes that make up this prestigious research organisation, the Fraunhofer IPA is one of the largest single institutes, employing around 350 scientists. It has an annual budget of approximately 36 million Euros, with 50 percent of its revenue stemming from industrial projects.

The »Ultraclean Technology and Micromanufacturing« department is an internationally renowned center of excellence in the field of production processes conducted under cleanroom conditions. It develops integrated, innovative and results-oriented solutions for tasks involving processes, equipment and production technology that relate to the industrial implementation and production of miniaturised and contamination-critical products. We support our industry partners in meeting the challenges they face in the field of production engineering.

Fraunhofer IPA is actually participating in or leading a wide variety of European research projects which focus e.g. on equipment self-description, plug- and produce concepts, integration of new manufacturing technologies into existing systems, factory- and line planning, -simulation and –automation, multi-site manufacturing and technology transfer. Examples therefore are XPRESS, FRAME, Transparency, PolyTubes, ManuCyte, and ManuCloud. Besides those research projects, IPA is also participating in industrial projects – e.g. as a consultant – where customers mainly are active in the field of semiconductor and photovoltaic industry, but also come from the automotive or life science area.

Contribution to Road2SoS
Fraunhofer IPA will contribute to the project by bringing in its broad knowledge of production processes, cloud manufacturing and contacts to industrial companies. Institute expertise related to the Road2SoS project tasks covers many integration aspects within the production environment. Those include software development and integration methodology, equipment communication, equipment integration, logistics, evaluation of software and devices, product traceability, etc. Thereby, the systems integrated range from various IT systems within one manufacturing site or company up to distributed manufacturing sites of one organization and even across companies. With this expertise, Fraunhofer IPA will support the data collection & analysis as well as roadmap development and dissemination and exploitation within this project with special regard to the domain of multi-site industrial production.
